Tardive Dyskinesia Webinar:

Social Determinants of Health in Black & Marginalized Communities

For Tardive Dyskinesia Awareness Week, California Access Coalition and Neurocrine hosted an informative webinar that that will focus on how stigma & social determinants of health have real-life implications on the mental health of Black & marginalized communities.

Tardive Dyskinesia (TD) is associated with long-term use of antipsychotic medications, which are often prescribed to treat people living with mental illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depression. This webinar focused on the actionable steps that can be taken to help decrease stigma and increase routine screenings, diagnosis and awareness of appropriate treatment of TD.

Dr. Smith’s presentation covered how the historical overprescribing of some mental health medications has led to a higher risk of certain conditions including drug induced movement disorders. Additionally, he discussed the disproportionate impact that having a movement disorder can have on these populations.

This webinar addressed screening guidelines and the importance of screening in all settings of care. Solutions were presented on what the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) and Legislature can do to improve equity in mental health care regardless of the payer or setting of care.

We thank our speakers for their valuable insight.
